Monday Oct 9  Columbus Day and/or Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Thanksgiving Day in Canada. In the past the second Monday of October has been a national holiday celebrating Columbus Day, but for the second year it is now celebrated as Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor Native American history and culture.

It is also the day Canadians celebrate their Thanksgiving.

Update Outdoor Writers of America Assn conference in Gulf Shores AL

It was well worth the 1,000 mile drive to Alabama to attend the annual  conference where we saw terrific speakers and exhibits. Some of our favorites were the keynote speaker Corey Lee, a young man with a website https://curbfreewithcorylee.com/ about traveling from a wheelchair user’s perspective.

The issue of accessibility was discussed by many. We enjoyed meeting Kim Jackson from Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports https://www.vermontadaptive.org, an organization that empowers people of all abilities through inclusive sports and recreational programming regardless of their ability to pay.

Two informative workshops we attended were by Kris Millgate and Maayan Gordon.

Kris Millgate is a wildlife photographer who was the epitome of show ‘n tell with  a hands on presentation of the various cameras, equipment and gear she uses to shoot wildlife documentaries.

Maayan Gordan at https://www.maayangordonmedia.com/ is a dynamic speaker and consultant who shared her passion for using social media to help improve company culture through education and training.

The lush setting of the diverse landscape in coastal Alabama was an ideal setting for enjoyable walking, biking, fishing and boating opportunities.

Saturday, October 14  An annular solar eclipse covers the sky beginning at  Oregon’s Pacific coast and spreads through the Southwest to the Texas coast. If you live in the area contact your local news for more information.

Saturday, Oct 28  Full Moon  This month the full moon is a “Hunter’s Moon” so named because it signals the hunting season along with ghosts and goblins.

Tuesday, Oct 31 Halloween The moon tonight may be haunting, especially for trick or treaters combing their neighborhood for candy.
